Default Cam install

Wanting to install cams so my engine sounds something like this.
I know this guy probably has other mods but a cam is what I want the most right now. I do have a xcal2 on the way so computer mods are going to be covered.

Has anybody had any experience installing cams from either Comp cams, Super Six, or Tom Morana? Do they come with instructions, quality of product, tips?

Also one last thing, about the comp cams, I'm thinking of going with the "Level 3" cams, which are right in the middle. Anybody have experience with those?

haven't dealt with comp, super six, or the other one, but a tip to installing the cam, Loosely bolt the old cam gear on the new cam so you have something to hold and move the cam when slideing it in. Use a lot of assembly lube on the lobes and the bearing journals. Put lube on the 1st bearing with your finger then slide the end of the cam in, a little bit, just enough to spin it and put some more lube on the cam. Slide it slowly, while turning it, to the next bearing and repeat the steps with assembly lube on the cam for each bearing as you push it through. Important, "Take Your Time"

just remember with a lot of cam's you will need valvetrain work as well. You can't just stuff any cam in your truck and think it will work. Stick to a mild cam and you will be fine.

Its stuff like that that makes a cam install complicated. The actual work is the easy part... its matching it all up to work properly that tends to suck... but once you have stuff figured out on paper its a breeze from there.

I wouldn't follow a manual that comes with a cam either... I'd use a chiltons manual. Its specific to your truck as the cam instructions that come with it probably won't be. And if they are they won't be as close to detailed and complete as a chiltons or hayes manual.

btw there is also a special tool to bolt to the cam to allow you to put it in straight. It's a handle to give you something to hold on to. I wouldn't put a cam in without one. Just too easy to chip and mess bearings and the cam lobe surface.

BTW what do you want to do with your truck? Why are you camming it? That alone will tell you how radical or mild you should go. No point in putting something meant for the track in a daily driver... and no point in putting something for a daily driver in something thats meant for the track / strip.

It is a daily driver, that is why I chose a milder cam. I didn't think this cam would require too much modifacation, other than springs.
